The Difference between PC and Mobile Gaming

New age smartphones, tablets and iPads are like mini computers with powerful processors and operating systems that have vastly improved on their predecessors. From the vast array of applications running on the phone to the speed and screen resolution, the experience is so much better when compared to smartphones from 5 years ago.

This has led to the development of new mobile games that are a far cry from the good old black and white games like Snake and Tetris. Modern games come with good graphics; challenges and concepts to make the users hooked and thus provide a fun experience for hours. Most mainstream mobile games boast of millions of downloads on play stores which show that they have caught on like wildfire.

Mobile games have even been giving PC games a run for their money and for good reason; you can’t beat a gaming experience that is literally at the palm your hands. You don’t need to carry your PC around to enjoy a good game, your mobile phone goes with you everywhere and so does your game. This makes them more convenient and thus popular than their PC counterparts. However, this is not to say that computer game developers have been sleeping on the job, they have been doing their best to break new ground for PC gamers constantly.

The divide between PC and Mobile games

Although modern mobile phones have been pushing the envelope when it comes to their features, they can’t quite compete with a PC’s powerful processors, displays and memory capabilities. This causes limitations in mobile gaming meaning the games don’t need as much money to develop a gaming app. Thus, developing a mobile game is way cheaper than developing one for a PC because the latter requires sophisticated display capabilities. For example, games like GTA 5 cost more than $5m to make.

The number of people required to design and code a mobile game can range between 2-5 people while a PC’s might need a team of up to 30 people depending on the game. This means more resources for the computer game as opposed to the mobile gaming which can even be developed by one designer or programmer.

Mobile games also don’t take as much time to develop, a game can be up and running within a few months of its idea’s conception. On the other hand, a standard computer game can take a number of years to reach maturity and see the light of day. This is because of the intricate nature of the programming and designing involved even with the help of a large team.

Conclusion

When all is said and done, there are limitations that come with mobile phones, smart as they have become. This is because their primary use is to facilitate voice data thus any additional feature is a bonus. For this reason, pitting them against PCs that are 10 times more powerful is kind of unfair. However, they come in handy when one needs the perfect distraction due to boredom or when on the move. When you want a true gaming experience then a computer game should be your go-to option. All in all, mobile gaming has come a long way and more is expected in future thus, hats off to the developers.
